Spain’s national team head coach Luis de la Fuente has signed a contract extension until 2032 with the Spanish Football Federation, the organization said. The 65-year-old’s last one was set to expire in 2028, but the deal will last until Spain’s next World Cup in 2030, when it will host the event.
De la Fuente has turned Spain’s fortunes around since the last-16 World Cup in Qatar, where Luis Enrique was replaced in December 2022.
His tenure has seen Spain win three major trophies, such as the UEFA Nations League in 2022-23 and the European Championship in 2024. They also won World Cup this summer, giving the coach added impetus to lead the national team to the top. On Wednesday, Spanish Football Federation president Raul Louzan confirmed the decision, asserting that the federation would have to keep things running as it heads into another big tournament cycle.
It’ll be very important for Spain, as the country will host the 2030 World Cup with Portugal and Morocco. Select games will also be played by Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay as part of the celebrations of a centenary of the tournament.
De la Fuente’s winning streak has been just as impressive. Under the Spaniards’ leadership, they have lost just two of their 41 competitive games since they took control, demonstrating good consistency in the biggest international games.
His new contract now allows him to manage Spain’s 2030 World Cup campaign and stay in charge post the event. The new deal ensures the continuity of a team that has been proved to be reliable and successful since the change in coaching in 2022, and De la Fuente will now be in charge of Spain’s next big international campaign.
