After scoring a late consolation goal after 2-1 defeat in Sunday’s derby against Mourinho Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid got the better of the Portuguese manager and he has lashed out at match officials for making key errors.
Mourinho took two screenshots of incidents to his press conference after the match that he felt should have led to red cards for Atletico players. The Real Madrid coach took the photos to demonstrate that things could have been very different if he had gotten his way in the selection.
“Right now, we could save ourselves the time of being here at this press conference, because the story of the match is right here,” Mourinho said referring to the printouts he was holding up.
The game took a drastic turn for the better for Atletico about a quarter of an hour into the second half. When Dean Huijsen was sent off after VAR (52nd minute), Mourinho had 10 players left to play.
Atletico struck first from the off with a chance, but it was not to be. A penalty in the 53rd was converted by Alejandro Grimaldo in front of Jonathan David’s double six minutes later that made the home side slightly ahead. Real Madrid were able to clear the deficit later in the game but failed to score an equaliser, and suffered their second defeat of the LaLiga season.
Mourinho said it “should” have been Atletico’s turn to sit with the loss of two players, adding that he had two to show to reporters. He pointed out how it was hard to play against 10 men after Huijsen was gone and explained that the match would’ve been very different if he had played 11 on 9 for the remainder of the game.
