Rafael Leao’s transfer from AC Milan to Galatasaray appeared to have ended in an emotional manner when the Portugal winger announced his retirement from the Italian giants, which he had been playing for since 2018.
27-year-old Leao, who played through Sporting Portugal’s youth system, signed for Milan from French club Lille in 2019. He became one of the most influential attackers in the club over the years and a key player at San Siro during his time there.
The winger has an impressive record as he has played 291 times for Milan in all competitions. During his stint with the seven-time European champions, he has got 80 goals and 65 assists.
His spell in Italy also produced silverware. Leao played an important role in Milan’s 2021-22 Serie A title triumph and was part of the squad that lifted the Italian Super Cup in the 2024-25 campaign. Milan reportedly have gone on the record to accept a €45 million ($52.12 million) offer from Galatasaray for the Portuguese international. The current contract with Milan is rumored to end June 2028.
When asked about his departure, Leao confessed that it was not easy as he thought about how Milan influenced his career. It is a tough time, Leao said, adding that he was grateful to his former teammates, the club and fans for being there for him on his journey. He also credited Milan for the development and understanding of the requirements of the highest level football, and the support of the fans at difficult times.
Leao also had words of pride about his performance at the club, stating that he felt he would be a part of Milan’s history. The transfer would be a big step for Leao, as Galatasaray could sign one of Europe’s more developed attacking talents.
