Injury of Samu Aghehowa has been a huge blow to Spain and FC Porto at a very critical time of the season. The 21 years old forward is to miss a few months following a serious knee injury he got playing with Porto. His FIFA world cup dreams are now in jeopardy by the setback.
Aghehowa sustained an anterior cruciate tear in the round against Sparta Lisbon, Porto and his team won by one goal on Monday. The injury has been confirmed to make him have the rest of the season off according to medical reports. It also translates to long rehabilitation process.
This is not the best time that the young striker could have. The world cup of FIFA starts on June 11 in North America. Aghehowa might not be fit in time to play in the Spain squad, given the fact that the recovery will take months. He had also already appeared twice in the qualification campaign of Spain and was considered an increasingly viable option in attack.
Aghehowa went to the social media to express his anger. He confessed the wound cuts deep. Failure to fight in the pitch has been the worst. In the meantime, he claims that he will be a fan but not a player of Spain.
He is also majorly challenged by Porto. Aghehowa has been excellent since he joined in August 2024 after having joined in Atletiko Madrid. In 50 league plays he had scored 32 goals. His movement, speed and finishing had become part and parcel of the Porto attack system. It will be not simple to fill that influence.
This leaves the club with no option, but to reconsider its attacking strategy in the rest of the season. Spain must also do without one of its brightest youths.
