Taiwo Awoniyi Transfer is set to become one of Coventry City’s biggest moves of the summer after the newly promoted Premier League side agreed a deal worth around £17 million with Nottingham Forest.
Coventry are looking to get the deal through before their first Premier League match against Arsenal on Friday, as manager Frank Lampard is continuing to make additions to his squad ahead of his club’s return to the top tier. Awoniyi will bring some welcome Premier League experience and attacking depth for the upcoming campaign.
The Nigerian international signed for Nottingham Forest on a club record fee of around £17.2m from Union Berlin in 2022. Awoniyi had a fine period of time at the City Ground during that period, netting 23 goals in 103 appearances and contributing to Forest’s campaign to keep their Premier League status in the previous seasons.
But the competition for the spots has increased at Forest. The 27-year-old striker was a little low on the pecking order with Chris Wood and Igor Jesus and had a poor deal of playing time. He was left out of Forest’s Europa League team last season and only started on three occasions with four goals in 17 appearances in all competitions.
There is great intent for Coventry as they aim to make the step up to the Premier League having been promoted. Awoniyi’s stature, mobility and Premier League experience could be vital as Lampard looks to construct a team that will challenge the likes of some of the league’s bigger teams.
