Champions League finals will return to two of Europe’s most iconic football venues, with Munich’s Allianz Arena and Barcelona’s Camp Nou selected to stage the competition’s showpiece matches in 2028 and 2029 respectively.
On Tuesday UEFA formalised the host arrangements with three Champions League finals for Bayern Munich’s home ground. The Allianz Arena was the venue of the last time in 2012, when Chelsea almost made a comeback to their home on penalties against Bayern Munich in a thrilling match. In 2025, it was the first European title that Paris Saint Germain won.
Allianz Arena in Munich is already in use and has a capacity of 70,000 spectators – the venue is ready to host the 2028 final. Bayern Munich’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen welcomed the decision saying that the city has an international brand and can produce such games.
Meanwhile Barcelona will be hosting Europe’s top club final at the Camp Nou in 2029. In 2023, the stadium started a significant redevelopment to make the iconic venue into a modern landmark of sports. This will be the third time Europe’s Showpiece has been played at Camp Nou since 2029. The last time it came into play was in 1999 when Manchester United found a fine solution with a late goal to down Bayern Munich 2-1.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta said that the stadium’s choice is a “big endorsement” for the redevelopment project, as the structure is a reflection of its “ambition to be a football landmark in the world.
The choices also allow for a compelling footballing history of Spain, as it will host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco. Although Barcelona and Munich are yet to be considered, Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano will host the 2026-27 Champions League finale on June 5.
