Anthony Gordon Barcelona headlines took centre stage on Saturday as the England international scored his first goal for the Spanish champions in a commanding 3-0 victory over Getafe, extending Barcelona’s perfect start to the season.
After a minute and a half into the contest, Gordon was able to put the hosts up 1-0 at Camp Nou. The summer signing from Barcelona has maintained his impressive form since his return, having impressed in the recent Nations League games for England.
Barcelona’s attacking form didn’t falter even without the services of their leading attacker, Raphinha, who suffered a hamstring injury on international duty for Brazil. In Gabriel Jesus’s absence, Flick chose to replace him with former Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus, who doubled the hosts’ lead in the 30th minute.
The second was scored after Getafe’s defence made a mistake. Defender Zaid Romero lost the ball in his own area and Jesus picked it up and calmly scored into the bottom corner.
Barcelona dominated the second half. Getafe goalkeeper David Soria parried one of Dani Olmo’s efforts but Lamine Yamal was able to score a third when he found Jules Kounde with a cross from close range. That was also the first time Kounde had been on the field for Barcelona and he became the Frenchman with the most appearances with the club, trailing only former defender Eric Abidal.
The win gave Barcelona an edge in La Liga. They took a five-point lead over second-placed Atletico Madrid, after a 2-1 victory against Alaves earlier in the day. Barcelona still held a nine-point lead over Real Madrid going into their game with Villarreal.
Barcelona’s supremacy has also spread to Europe. The Catalan side have now won their first Champions League game and find themselves nine points ahead on the season table from nine games on the sheet this season.
