Hull City emerged from their spell in the Premier League with a sensational 2-0 win against Manchester United at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, returning to the top flight with a bang. It was also Hull’s first home win over Manchester United in 52 years and was an instant statement from the new breed of side.
It was in the 17th minute that Hull got the better of the United defence when they had trouble defending a corner. Senne Lammens saved Oli McBurnie’s first save, but Semi Ajayi reacted fastest to the rebound and was able to poke the ball into the net. Hull’s first Premier League win since May 21, 2017.
It was doubled in the 38th minute, though, when Regan Slater’s dangerous free-kick found Nobel Mendy in the box. Mendy delivered a header past Lammens revealing more set-piece defending issues at the United end.
He was delighted to put his team ahead, he said,, and described his opening goal as the way to complete Hull’s impressive start, in an interview with TNT Sports. The defender added that neither outside expectations or criticism were a concern for Hull in their Premier League campaign. Rather, he said the team has faith in itself and is intent on having a positive season.
Marcus Rashford had his first home appearance in his boyhood club since 2024 when he was brought on for the second half at Manchester United. But his comeback wasn’t enough to bring a change for United.
Hull were able to hold on nicely to secure one of the largest wins of the opening weekend. The strict discipline and quality of their deliveries, plus the lack of ball control from United in the box, helped them to grab three points and an early lead in their campaign to return to the top flight.
