Juan Mata has decided against playing another season for Melbourne Victory, but the Spanish World Cup winner has left the door open regarding his future in professional football. The 38-year-old had a stellar comeback in 2025-26 in the Australian A-League Men season, playing a pivotal role for Melbourne Victory and winning the league’s player of the year accolade.
But, despite his successful campaign, Mata has not decided on continuing his career with the club but is thinking of what’s next. But his relationship with the club has not come to an end, as the former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder will continue to be closely involved off the pitch with the decision. Mata became a minority owner of Melbourne Victory in June, marking a significant new chapter after years of playing at the highest level in Europe and internationally.
However, the conditions of his tenancy contract were not revealed, but Mata will be directly involved in the club’s newly created football committee as its chairman.
In his reflections on his Melbourne experience, Mata said he had really enjoyed it all, and that the club and Melbourne had helped him to “rediscover his passion for football”. He also shared his joy of being involved in the future of Australian football and helping to nurture the next generation of players and footballers.
Mata made his choice after a glittering career and World Cup glory for Spain in 2010 with Valencia, Chelsea and Man United. Instead of retiring, Mata has said that his current role is one of “next steps”. That will leave his playing future up in the air but guarantee he will have a role in Melbourne Victory’s development.
