Spain vs England produced another dramatic chapter in their growing rivalry as Spain fought back from behind to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over England at Wembley on Saturday.
The outcome kept Spain’s unbeaten run going at a record 39 consecutive games in Europe as well as the form of Luis de la Fuente’s team. It also provided Spain with another win over England following their Euro 2024 final victory.
Lamine Yamal was able to build a strong opening for England after picking up a defending error from Marc Guehi. Spain threatened relentlessly and set up a number of chances and then slowly England got going.
The game was evened in the 36th minute as Anthony Gordon played a well worked attacking move to give Wembley a new lease of life. It was only four minutes later when England turned things around. Harry Kane came to the rescue of the cross by the late Nico O’Reilly, which bounced off Marc Cucurella before getting to the net.
Soon after half-time, Kane had a chance to build on England’s lead when they were awarded a penalty. But, the skipper, who was in the process of taking the kick, lost his footing and his shot hit the crossbar.
Spain came back strong and took control, with their substitutions. Visitors were given a fighting chance by Alex Baena before Mikel Oyarzabal took the lead to give them a second chance, but the hosts failed to react in the dying moments.
De la Fuente commended his team’s belief and claimed Spain dominated the match against a “superpower” in England. On the other hand, Kane acknowledged that England once again failed to stay as high as they are for the entire 90 minutes.
