Aston Villa Take Carragher to Court Over Remarks

Aston Villa’s complaint against Jamie Carragher has become a football hot button as the Premier League club has claimed the Liverpool legend made “unacceptable” comments about the club’s supporters and its ambitions. The club had plans to take legal action following comments by Carragher in the Stick to Football podcast, which were reported by Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris on Friday.

The former England international received criticism after speaking to Aston Villa fans about their “shut the [expletive deleted] up” after conceding that manager Unai Emery was “thinking about moving to Manchester United”. Carragher also hinted that Villa could never live up to the heights of Manchester United, adding to the wrath of Villa fans.

Villa was rebuffed in an official statement which expressed the club’s stance and noted that it did not accept what was being described as “unacceptable insults” against the club and its supporters. He has also pledged that the club will keep on making strides in English and European football regardless of what is said about it.

But Carragher tried to defuse the situation in his social media post, which read: “We must remember my comments were a joke in response to the criticism I had received from Villa supporters. He said he was trying to “draw attention to Emery’s quality of being a manager, not detract from Aston Villa’s”.

The former Liverpool defender also pointed to his previous praise for the Spanish coach and congratulated Villa on winning the 2026 Europa League in Istanbul. Both sides have yet to reveal other details of proposed legal action. It is also unclear what precise legal reasons Villa intended to take her action, and the matter still hangs in the balance.
